The Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) will, effective 2018, commence a new initiative dubbed, CANOC Week.
According to a decision of the CANOC Executive while meeting in Prague, Czech Republic, on 2 November 2017, the decision emerged out of a recommendation of the members at the organisation’s annual workshop held in Miami, Florida, USA, on 14 October 2017.
The membership mandated the Executive to establish a region-wide annual activity to serve as a means of at once showing solidarity amongst them and promote the image and activities of the organization and the membership.
The Executive agreed proposed dates for the inaugural CANOC Week are 4 – 10 March 2018. Member National Olympic Committees and Commonwealth Games Associations are being encouraged to engage in special celebration of the contributions of CANOC Women in Sport on 8 March 2018, International Women’s Day.
Chair of CANOC’s Women in Sport Commission, Annette Knott, has committed to galvanizing the full support of all National Olympic Committees that do not yet have Women’s Commissions, to do so within the next six months and also to encourage the participation of girls and women in the observance of whatever activities are planned for 8 March 2018.
Chair of CANOC’s Academy Commission, Angel Morales, in commenting on the initiative, appealed to all members to begin immediately to plan for the inaugural CANOC Week in order to ensure its success and eventual institutionalization in the Caribbean sporting landscape
