SVGOC President Trevor ‘Sailor’ Bailey's Message - Olympic Day 2020

On June 23, St. Vincent & the Grenadines will join thousands of people worldwide to celebrate Olympic Day. Olympic Day is a global celebration of the forming of the International Olympic Committee and the modern Olympic Movement by Pierre de Coubertin in 1894.

We know that the health crisis has greatly impacted Sports and has affected our athletes as they would have reached the peak of their training at this time of the year. The SVGNOC cares about you and I want to encourage our athletes to continue to train, stay calm and be focused. Use this period to reflect on your past competition, training and goals for the advancement of your sporting career. The situation has affected our coaches and administrators as well but we are all determined sports people and I believe that brighter days are coming.

We will continue to provide opportunities for our athletes and coaches. Many of our affiliates have had creative ways to try to help their athletes stay fit by organizing online meetings and virtual competition on different platforms. The women in sports commission have some events planned for us this week; others have use this period to train harder.

Competition time is coming again very soon, do not quit, never give up but let us face all challenges head on as we strive for excellence. Paul the evangelist said, in Phil 3:13 “I have not yet reached my goal and I am not perfect, but I keep on running and struggling to take hold of the prize.

Press towards the finish line.

The National Society Of and For the Blind (NSOFB) have long since had a relationship with the St Vincent and the Grenadines Olympic Committee (SVGOC).

On Olympic Day June 23rd 2020, the SVGOC engaged the members of the NSOFB in a Day of recreation, highlighting the continued policy of inclusion in the general modus of the organisation and in the spirit of Olympism. We share photos and videos of their celebration of Olympic Day.

OLYMPIC DAY: WHAT IS IT? WHEN IS IT? AND EVERYTHING ELSE YOU NEED TO KNOW TO GET INVOLVED

What is Olympic Day?

Olympic Day is a celebration of sport, health, and being the best you can be. It invites everyone around the globe to be active.

Participants from all over the world will commemorate the day the International Olympic Committee was founded in 1894.

And here’s how you can get involved in the 2020 edition, by being part of the official Olympic Day Workout.

When is Olympic Day?

Olympic Day takes place this year on Tuesday 23 June 2020, and people across the world will celebrate by getting active. You can join in!

Olympians have been a source of inspiration and motivation during these tough times with their energy and positivity: their home workouts have helped us stay moving and their stories have kept us mindful during lockdown.

On 23 June the Olympic Movement will celebrate Olympic Day by creating the world’s largest 24 hour digital-first Olympic workout.

Who can take part in Olympic Day?

But you don’t have to be an Olympian to get involved.

Join us for a day full of live athlete-led home workouts from the likes of USA gymnast Laurie Hernandez, France’s five-time Olympic biathlon champion Martin Fourcade, India’s star wrestler Vinesh Phogat, China’s rising skier Gu Ailing Eileen, and Tongan sensation Pita Taufatofua.

On this day, of all days, it’s time to #StayHealthy, #StayStrong, and #StayActive!

Olympic Day History

The 2020 edition is the first to go truly global, online, to ensure we can all still #StayActive in the safest way possible despite restrictions because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

But we can trace the beginning of Olympic Day all the way back to 1947.

Doctor Josef Gruss, a Czech IOC member, presented the idea of a World Olympic Day at the 41st Session of the International Olympic Committee in Stockholm that year, proposing a day be set aside to celebrate everything that the Olympics stands for.

A few months later the project got the nod at the 42nd IOC Session in St Moritz in January 1948. The National Olympic Committees were put in charge of organising this event and the date celebrates a special moment in the history of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which was founded at the Sorbonne, Paris, on 23 June 1894, where Pierre de Coubertin rallied the revival of the Olympic Games.

When was the first Olympic Day?

The first ever Olympic Day was celebrated on 23 June 1948.

Portugal, Greece, Austria, Canada, Switzerland, Great Britain, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Belgium organised an Olympic Day in their respective countries and Sigfrid Edström, IOC President at the time, relayed a message to the young people of the world.

When did Olympic Day enter the Olympic Charter?

In the 1978 edition of the Olympic Charter, the IOC recommended for the first time that all NOCs organise an Olympic Day to promote the Olympic Movement:

“It is recommended that NOCs regularly organise (if possible each year) an Olympic Day intended to promote the Olympic Movement.”

What do people do on Olympic Day?

But Olympic Day now is so much bigger than a run, a workout, or a single sporting event.

National Olympic Committees are getting creative worldwide basing efforts on the three pillars of “move”, “learn” and “discover” to engage everybody – regardless of age, gender, social background or sporting ability.

Some countries have even incorporated the event into the school curriculum.

Antigua and Barbuda NOC plans Olympic Day tribute to front-line workers

Thousands of workers on the front-line during the COVID-19 pandemic will be honoured – virtually – by the Antigua and Barbuda National Olympic Committee as part of its Olympic Day activities that will take place on Friday (June 26).

Paul “Chet” Greene, President of the Antigua and Barbuda NOC, confirmed to the Antigua Observer that the celebrations would take place three days after the International Olympic Day date of June 23, adding: “We are going virtual due to social distancing policies.

“So there is no grouping up and teaming up of families and sports groups and associations and the focus of this year would be a toast or recognition to our frontline workers.”

The June 26 observation of Olympic Day will involve athletes past and present and will see the distribution of shirts to more than 500 front-line workers.

Greene added that there would be pre-recorded messages from former athletes, including those bound for the Olympics in Tokyo, offering messages of solidarity and encouragement to the front-line workers.

He thanked one corporate sponsor – Cool & Smooth – which had been involved in the shirt production.
